Remote Desktop on Vista unusable

I just installed Vista Ultimate on my Home PC which used to run XP Pro. When
I had XP Pro, I could RDC to my machine from work without any problem
whatsoever and it worked great. Now after setting up Vista (and downloading
the new RDC client), whenever I connect to my Vista machine from work, the
Remote Session will intermittently pause sometimes for a few seconds all the
way up to a minute or so. I've tried playing around with the RDC client
setting disabling everything (i.e. bare minimum) and I still get the "stall"
effect. It's really weird, like some garbage collection routine gone amok,
it just randomly goes into la-la land and the only thing I can do is wait for
it to "come back" so I can continue working....it is getting very
aggravating. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is there a solution?

I'd try VNC. I prefer UltraVNC but YMMV...
