remote desktop connection logs me off after 20?? minutes using VPN

I connect ot my pc at work (broadband) thgrough a VPN connection, then
connect thru remote desktop -but it 'freezes the RDC after 20 minutes.
Seems the VPN is still going?
Only way to get it it going is close ISP connection, then close VPN &
RDC, and then start again.
Ideas to track down the right "button" to fix - would be much
appreciated.

What makes you think (other than it showinfg still connected) that VPN is
still working?
Can you connect to other resources behind the VPN after your RDC freezes?
If you just disconnect VPN/reconnect - what is the results?
