Remote Desktop Connection from Outside of LAN Environment

R

Roger Combs

All,

I have 3 Windows 2000 Servers running behind a SONICWALL
PRO 200 Firewall (Port 3389 enabled). All clients have
Windows XP Professional on desktop levels. The "Allow
users to connect using remote desktop have been enabled"
on desktops. I can connect from inside the office using
remote desktop to other PC. Once I am outside office at
home I cannot connect to specified PC inside my LAN at
office? It say it cannot find the computer specified. Am
I missing on step?

Are you connecting to the IP address or the computername
and are the IP's virtual or public.

Test this using the telnet test detailed in this KB article...You need to test this from a remote
location or dial into the internet using a laptop, etc.

Call using the public IP of the firewall...

You would use the public IP of your router for the test. Example...

telnet 12.34.56.68 3389

where 12.34.56.78 is the IP assigned by your ISP to your router. Troubleshoot as detailed in the KB
article...

If you run services.msc from the command line you can see if Terminal Services are running on an XP
Pro box.
