Remote desktop and USB/FW devices other than printers and disks

I try to remotely control a desktop PC running WinXP Pro SP2 from a laptop
with the same OS. On my desktop I run Cubase and have a USB MIDI device
(Steinberg USB-2-MIDI) attached for getting input from my (piano) keyboard.
Cubase runs nicely, but the USB MIDI device is not seen when I connect using
Remote desktop. I'm not trying to "transfer" the MIDI data in any way to my
laptop, I'm just remotely controlling the desktop and I thought this would
be fairly easy, but it appears I was wrong.

Am I doing something wrong or is this the way Remote desktop works? If the
latter, does anyone no of an remote application other than Remote desktop
that will do the trick? And would the problem be the same if I attached a
soundcard using e.g. FireWire?

USB devices are not supported... I doubt Firewire is either...

That's to bad. Does anyone know of any software apart from Remote desktop
that would solve my problem?

IIRC When I worked with remote desktop several years back USB worked,
but it was a pain in the butt to get it to do so. I know that I used
the remote desktop web connection (installed via add/remove programs -
windows components). The default page that loads up when a user goes to
the website that terminal services and so forth installed (be sure to
forward any ports as needed) could easily be modified in the settings
section. The default port number could be easily changed there as well
as changing from false to true or no to yes the option for connectiong
"other ports: iirc. This was neccessary to load up the USB virtual
ports and what not. Hope this is of help, or puts you on the right
track. I haven't messed with it for a couple of years (was winxp pro -
can't remember whether sp1 was on or not), and I don't know if I ever
got it woring without using the web client. Anyway... I could be
wrong, but that is what I remember...
Good luck!
