Remote assistant

I cannot get remote assistant to connect. I am trying to either share an
application or use remote assistant via Windows Messaging. Messages work OK
but anything like Whiteboard, Voice or share application opens up a share
session that will not connect to the other computer. Both computers are
connected via DSL Modem/Routers at separate sites, there is no firewall
enabled.
Can anyone help
