I'm asking this again because no one has been able to help me get port 3389
to listen...
Thanks for all the threads on this topic, but after reading them all, I still
haven't seen how to open port 3389 to listen when it is not according to the
results I get when running "cmd". My W-XP DELL was working well for remote
assistance over internet until I installed various programs. I don't know
which one messed it up, but I have a suspition that it could be Adobe Reader
7.0 with all it's new security stuff. In any case, all I get for a response
to running "ask a friend for assistance" in the regular remote assistance XP
Home Edition program
"Cannot display the page
The page you are trying to view cannot be displayed. This may be because:
If you are trying to view this content over the network, there may be
network congestion or a problem with your connection.

Please check your network connection or try another page. "

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Thanks for your quick reply ! No, I have not bought or installed
any new hardware since I am no longer able to access the MS service
for Remote Assistance. It actually still works fine using another
laptop on the same ISP connection. I have looked at all the
settings on the other laptop to try and copy them on the one that
doesn't work and I can't find any difference except that the
netstat -a report says the working one has port 3389 listening and
the other laptop that doesn't work doesn't say anything about the
3389 port listening.
Yes, my IP address starts with 192.168...

You see, with your IP being a private IP - you have a router/NAT device
somewhere. That router/NAT device has a public IP. That router/NAT device
has to be configured to forward port 3389 through to one of the machines it
is handing out IPs to - or it may be using uPnP.

Tell us more about your configuration... What type of router, what you have
confioggured the router to do, etc.

Acrobat Reader 7 has no "new security stuff" that would affect anything
other than Adobe Acribat Reader 7.x...

Noticed something else....
Your problem has nothing to do with Port 3389 being open. You state...

"... In any case, all I get for a response to running "ask a friend for
assistance" in the regular remote assistance XP Home Edition program 'Cannot
display the page. The page you are trying to view cannot be displayed. This
may be because:' ..."

Which tells me something is wrong with your remote assistance Help Center..
Not any port issues at this point. Your Help and Support Center likely
comes up no matter how you try to access it like this..

Things to try to fix your Help and Support Center...
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/helpctr.htm

Good luck in fixing this one - one of those tips should get you around tyhe
trouble with your help and support center.

And to let you know - I think I am understanding your issue now. You may
not even be trying to connect to any of your machines outside your intranet.
You are just trying to request the help from someone and are unable to do
this. From your description and further information - I gather your trouble
has nothign to do with your open ports - and your surmising it had something
to do with Acrobat Reader 7.x security settings is pretty far fetched. ;-)
It's not to say that Acrobat did not screw up your Help and Support center -
although I doubt that - but it doesn't have anything "security-wise" built
into it thjat would block any of your ports.

Try fixing your help and support center. See if your problem goes away.

In fact - try to open "Help and Support" from the Start button menu and tell
us if it opens.
