remote assisstance

I'm trying to help a little old lady that bought herself a laptop and I'm
gettin tired of running over everytime there is a problem. She is running
XP Home and I have XP Pro. When she requests remote assisstance everything
starts off the way it should and after she gives permission I can see her
screen. However there is nothing I can do with the screen and typing online
giving her instructions is pretty much useless.

Help tells me that she can set permission so that I can access her machine
BUT it does not explain how and I could not find any setting. Anyone know
what she needs to do for this to work?

She does have Norton and some anti-spy sweeping program - if may be what is
causing the problem.

It is very simple. On *your* screen from one of the top file menu
listings, there is an option to be able to control the remote computer
(hers). Click it and I believe she'll get another box on her screen
where she has to OK the control and then you'll be able to control her
box.

If Remote Assistance is not working for you right, i recommend the
program RealVNC or LogMeIn(.com).
RealVNC is really fast and easy but there are better programs out there
but not free. You have to OPEN A PORT if you are not on the same lan.
LogMeIn does NOT require open port because her machine would be
connected to their server and you just need IE(firefox highly
recommended!)or another browser and login into the account and connect!
BUT.. Then you need her WINDOWS info or, create an ADMIN(yes, it needs
to be on admin lvl) account to be able to connect.
LogMeIn Free has Remote Control(256-bit secure) and some other stuff but
LogMeIn pro has guest invite(used to invite other LogMeIn users) and
file transfer and much more.
Please reply me/the group what you think of RealVNC AND LogMeIn (try
both ;))

It is not that simple if I could not easily find that option. You would
think that when you use a program that requests remote assistance that these
options would be pretty obvious. It must have been designed by the same
programmers that tell you how to enable the Windows Media Player Mini-Mode.
I will look longer the next time.

Thanks,
Al

Thanks for the suggestions there should be better programs than Remote
Assistance. I put the remote assisstance icon on her desktop and it would
be nice to set up options so that all she needs do is click on it and if I
am online, control would be tranferred to me. She is 77 just learning about
the shift key... these are the type of people that can really use some
assistance without the need to jump through a whole bunch of hoops, .i.e
click this, then select that, then kiss Bill... Their problem is usually
finding lost e-mail or opening an attachment that they can't open in Outlook
Express.

The daily calls for help used to be fun and I am trying to find a better
solution and quicker solution than a visit.

I'm sorry you had trouble finding it. I just used this method with an
elderly client of mine so I know it works.

Other third-party methods:

UltraVNC (free)
pcAnywhere (commercial program from Symantec)
