remote access

I have a few machines in the house - all running XP Home. I would like to be
able to access one of the machines from another machine. I read that
pcanywhere can do this. I also read that XP has the capability built in. Can
anyone give me some guidance regarding setting this up?

XP Pro has the capability built in, XP Home does not.

e.g. home to office or vice versa.) You will find expert advice
in microsoft.public newsgroups named for "networking."
Your main decision is whether to connect your PCs by
wire (NIC) or by wireless. WinXP Pro has a Network Wizard
to simplify the task (configured on the host machine, then
transferred via floppy to the clients) but the software provided free
with wireless routers or PCI wireless cards can probably
do what you want.

PC anywhere works over Ethernet too.

I have been using RealVNC ver.3.3.7 since 2003, for home use. I prefer it
over the later versions. It has work on PCs on my home network, with Win98,
XP Home, and XP Pro. I do not know if it will work with Vista.

You can download a *.Zip file containing both Server and Client install
files from:
http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/3.3.7/download.html

Also read all the installation documentation, on the web site before
installing.

All you need to do is to select the OS platform you need, you do not need to
fill out the other info boxes, unless you want to.

Once you install both the server and client application on your PC you need
to do the following:
1. Make sure you select a password for the installation, you will receive
prompts about that.
2. You will need to enable Printer and File Sharing on each PC.
3. Under Control Panel> Security> Windows Firewall> Exceptions tab, you may
need to add the following programs to the list, if they were not added
through the installation process:

C:\Program Files\RealVNC\WinVNC\winvnc.exe
C:\Program Files\RealVNC\vncviewer.exe

If you use a third party firewall program like ZoneAlarm, you may need to
add these programs to their exception list, too.

4. Make sure that each PC is listed with same workgroup name.
5. Repeat for each PC you install the RealVNC program on.
