Reminder alarm - when Outlook is not open?

I have Outlook 2001. I'm only a home PC user and have no particular
use for Outlook apart from wanting to be able to set up alarms and
reminders - like 'put out dustbin!' etc.

I know how to set up reminders but presumably Outlook must be opened
before they will work. Can anybody tell me how to make Outlook open
and just sit on the task bar when I turn on my PC?

Alternatively, is there any simple program that I can use that will
just give me the facility to set up simple reminders - birthdays etc.?

No you don't, unless you're using a Mac.

Create a shortcut to Outlook in your Startup folder. Edit the properties of
that shortcut to open the application minimized.

There are plenty of these available on the INternet and Google can help you
find them.
