Relay Access Denied

Windows XP SP2 - all patched and up to date
Outlook 2003 - all patched and up to date

Box for "My outgoing server requires authentication" is unticked and always
has been.

From today I keep getting sent emails returned to me with the message:
host virus-mx.bur.connect.com.au[210.8.230.18]said: 554 5.7.1
<[email protected]>: Relay access denied (in reply to
RCPT TO command)

This is with all addresses I'm sending to.

Everything's been fine until today and I haven't changed anything. I read
that I should tick the box about authentication but then read elsewhere that
it should remain unticked.

Other people have said they ticked it and it made no difference but there
was no resolution except to change something in the hosts file.

Does anyone else know about this?

Thanks.

The first thing I'd do would be to make sure AAPT (connect.com.au) hasn't
changed their authentication requirements, although their Help pages
suggests this isn't the case. The second thing I'd do would be to make sure
I'm not scanning mail with any anti-virus or -spam product. (The anti-spam
product can be added back in later when troubleshooting is complete, but I'd
not re-add the AV scanning.) The third thing I'd do would be to locate the
most recent Outlook security patch and uninstall it to see if that made a
difference.

As luck would have it, emails are now sending fine again and again, I
haven't touched anything.

Thanks heaps for that but and I'll keep your answer for future reference.
