my son has a pc that has two hard drives both have/had XP profesional ver 2002.

while working in a program on drive #1 it locked up. after rebooting sys he
started getting errors. (did not say what types). for some reason he made a
choice of reformating drive #2. (which had one big file). after he reformated
he attempt to reinstall XP to drive #2. however the pc would not boot off of
this cd.

i download from MS the windows xp setup boot disks. took the file to his pc
and loaded it to drive 1. went to the folder to run the program to make the
disks and got the following error

16 bit ms dos

c:docume~/user\locals~1\temp\ixp000.tmp\makeboot.exe

c:\windows\system32\autoesc.nt.
the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows
applications..

(i can make the disks on my pc, i have not returned to his house to try and
run the disk i made yet)

A few PC's come with the boot order of C only. Look in the BIOS setup
to set the boot order to 1 floppy, 2 cdrom, 3 harddisk.
