Reinstalling Windows XP

Please help!!!!

My desktop with windows xp Profesional (OEM version)
crashed, I cannot start the computer in safe mode. I try
to reinstall windows xp buit can't get it started.

I selected the cd rom drive as the boot device in the
bios, put the windows xp professional cd into the drive
but the computer does not recognize it (the CD). What am
I doing wrong? I do not want to do a new installation,
just a reinstallation (repair) because I dont want to
loose all the information on the harddrive!

Please advice!

I think many people missed the "message" at the bottom of the screen during
boot up. After you insert the Xp Cd into the drive, while the PC is
rebooting, there's a message at the bottom of the screen that says something
like this, "...press any key to install from Cd...". If you don't press
any key within a few seconds, it will bypass the CD and go to the next Bios
boot sequence, such as your harddrive.
