Are you re-installing or clean installing?

The web has extensive information on both topics.

If you are doing a clean install - that is formatting the drive and then
installing XP - then i have an illustrated guide on my website
http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org Click the Win XP Faq button and take a look
at question 85 For a re-install or 'repair' see question 55. Both these
questions assume you have a retail copy of the windows XP CD. With recovery
disks you don't actually get much choice, you simply put the CD into the
CD-ROm, reboot click a few options and the CD does the rest. With any clean
install i would suggest that you remove any USB based hardware - modem,
printer, etc. If you have a serial port printer i would remove that too. The
only other thing you need is drivers for your hardware. Make sure you have
them ready for when you start plugging everything back in again.
