Reinstalling Windows XP and now having Hard Drive issue.

H

hummels

I have a Dell Dimension 4400 which I am running into problems with
after trying to Re-Install Windows XP. They entire system was slowing
down, We don't have much on there that couldn't be backed up to a CD,
So I decided to clear everything off and start with a Fresh Install.
(Extreme, yes . . . )
Here are the steps I took and the issues I had (to the best of my
memory).

I booted from the "Reinstallation CD" which came from Dell.
Deleted the current partition and created a new one.
The Process Formatted the Drive and began the Windows XP Installation
process.
I let the process go while it was going through the installation, and
came back to a Blue Screen with the following error(s): (got this also
after a couple retries)
KERNAL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
Also mentioned Win23k.sys.
Googled for any information on this, but could not find much for my
particular case. One suggestion was to disconnect anything connected.
Only thing to really "disconnect" was my Cable Modem. So I
disconnected that from my PC.
Not sure if disconnecting the Cable Modem was it, but the next try
went through to where it sets up the Time Zone, Internet, User Names,
etc.
So, I thought I was all set. I went to the Windows Update section and
started downloading the needed upgrades.
Got that started and left the room again. This time when I cam back,
I had a black screen with the error
"No Boot Device Detected: System Halted"
So, I started from square one with the Installation. The Windows
Setup then gave me this message:
"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on your computer"
!!!! (ahhhhh. Who stole it?)
I went into the BIOS (A06) and it shows the "Primary IDE Master" being
"[Not Installed]". Which I'm unsure if that is completely Wrong or
OK.
About a year ago, I did receive a new Hard Drive and installed it. So
I pulled out the 2 install disks that came with it. Booted up to the
disk, and went through the menu.
I restarted the install again. Again, I got the message :
KERNAL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR. ( I see a circle starting )

I'm hoping there is something simple, and I don't actually have a bad
hard drive. As it was just fine before the Re-Install, I'm guessing a
setting is messed up, or misconfigured. Any suggestions?

Based on some of the research I have done, this was fixed by upgrading the BIOS on the motherboard or completely changing the board.
