Reinstalling W2K w/sp#4

nicholas

I have W2K running with SP#4, 512 Ram, 20G HD and would like to reinstall W2K from my original
disk over the existing software. I am really unsure of this, and would like your opinions as to
would this work without causing harm to my present installed W2K?

Yes you can reinstall Windows over top of itself like that. You will
loose all updates and it will take you back to no service pack level. It
is usefull to fix Windows files issues but will not usually fix registry
or 3rd party program issues.

Why are you backing off of SP4? I was wondering since I had to go through
the same cycle simply to get a stable system - SP4 really messed things up.
Backing off to SP1 and then installing SP3 fixed things but my system still
won't work with SP4.

Thank you Leonard and Redmonite for your replies. I have a problem, but cannot determine if it
is in my windows files, or in the registry. SP#4 had been working well, until recently. Several
different virus scans, spybot and Adaware were run, and came up clean. What it does is,
when I try to send an email message it shuts down and gives this message..
Driver_IRQL_NoL_less_or_equal Ndis.sys. Email client, Eudora, has been reinstalled to no avail.

This stop error may be NIC driver related. I would update your NIC
first. Also are you using any type of antivirus that scans email when
sending it. You can make certain it is not Eudora by running Outlook
Express and sending test message with it. However I suspect it is driver
related given the stop error you are getting.

Thank you Leonard for your reply.

Looks like my problem is in either Eudora, or in the files in W2K.

Ok so have you tested with Outlook Express to see if it has the same
problem? Do you have any virus software that scans outgoing messages?
Need to narrow down the problem more. Did you update your NIC?

Leonard,

Thanks again for your reply.
I disabled my Norton AV, disabled Zone alarm, and tried Outlook express. all sent the email
fine. Guess it is in my OS, what do you think. Additionally, I dual boot with WME, and the
eudora of the same vintage works fine, using the same scenario.

So if I understand you correctly you can send mail with Outlook Express
but not with Eudora. It sounds like the copy of Eudora in this install
is damaged in some way because Outlook Express will use same OS features
as Eudora. This is not conclusive but very likly. Since you disabled
Norton AV we know that problem is not any virus scaning that is occuring
when email is sent.
