Reinstalling RpcSs

Shawn Smith

Hello All.

Unfortunately, I deleted the RpcSs key from my Win2000
registry, and I was hoping (praying) there is a way to
reinstall thesa services without having to do a clean
Win2000 install?

I do not have another profile so I am unable to "boot to
the last known good profile". I have also tried copying
the Registry key values from another machine and entering
them manually, but that has not helped much (while I am now
at least able to see RPC listed within the Services,
attempting to start it gives an error indicating "unable to
find associated program").

Since I need this computer to give a presentation on
Wednesday, any and all help is most certainly appreciated.

Thanks.

Best Regards,

Shawn

If all you deleted was the key (no files) you may be able to restore
from a recent registry backup. Do you have one? Did you do a
SystemState backup recently?

Otherwise I suspect that a Repair Installation is one solution.
This is installing the OS over (on top) of itself and will require
re-apply of SPs and Hotfixes.

For the future. One should always have multiple accounts
established. 2 Administrator accounts with strong passwords and one
or more User accounts. Regular registry (and data) backups are
essential.
I do not have another profile so I am unable to "boot to

LKG has nothing to do with User profiles. You should be able to use
that option _if_ you have not successfully booted since the mishap.

Mark,

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, I beleive I need a
second solution.

I tried to do a repair, but it did not appear to help.
(Booted from a Windows2000 CD and pressed "R"....performed
a repair of all changed files from the original
installation CD). One thing that is interesting is
performing a Repair did not remove any of my Service Packs.
..etceteras)

Upon re-booting, RpcSs is still not working after I log
onto my laptop. Further, I am unable to manually restart
it from the Services management; it's set to start
automatically, but if I manually try to start it I receive
an error message 2 indicating it cannot be found on the
"local system" --- actually, I also receive an error
message after clicking on the Services and Application tab
stating there was an error connecting to the local machine
and would I like to continue to try connecting to it in the
future (I've manually located svchost.exe and rpcss.dll
within the ..\system32\... folder so I'm not sure what the
problem is)

The behavior after logging in is it takes forever for my
DeskTop to display, the Search, Add/Remove programs, and
other things don't work, and worst of all: I don't have any
networking connectivity (Dial-up Networking is empty).

Any other ideas are most truly appreciated. Maybe, I
didn't perform the repair correctly or something. I wonder
what the default values for the the RpcSs key and sub-keys
are?

Best Regards,

Shawn

No. A "repair" is not the same as a re-installion used to "repair".
You may need to actually re-install over the top of the existing
instalation. Since you do not seem to have a registry backup this
"repair installation", also called an "in-place" install, is my best
suggestion. I suggest you post in
microsoft.public.win2000.general
as I don't have handy the MS KB articles at the moment.
Also, depending on what kind of Repair you did, it is possible that
some needed registry entries for other things are now gone.
