I have a Win 2k server which is also my DC. I also have an Exchange 2k server. My DC was built on a 4 GIG drive and has very little room for the OS (updates are impossible). I need to put my DC OS on a larger hard drive. From what I have read it sounds like my first move may be to set up my Exchange Server as a backup DC. Then reinstall Win 2k server on my new hard drive. Make the new server the primary DC. Then AD will automatically restore from the Exchange server to the new server. Restore my data drive and I'm set. ??? Please advise.

simplier solution will be making the image of partitions with for
example Northon ghost, replacing the hard drive with bigger and bigger
partitions and restore this image on tis new disk

Thanks for your help. I will look into Ghost further. I was previously told that Ghost could only be used on partitions of the same size which would not solve my problem. But if I can put an image of a 4 GIG drive onto a 36 GIG drive that would be worth a try. Do you know?

I don't use it in that way but befora I post my previous reply in this
thread I ask about it my friend which is very familiar with this tool
and he told me that this is possible - so check it :)

A couple of issues here, first and foremost is this a test or
production environment. If it is a production environment then you
definitely need more than one DC. You can get a cheap machine for a
second DC but you need that other DC in case disaster hits.

You can move system/boot drive to new hardware

I still suggest having at least two DC's

Promote another server, I would stay away from Exchange because e-mail
is the lifeblood of most organizations.

I would add another drive and you can move the AD database (ntds.dit)

I hope that helps

Thanks
