Reinstall Windows without a dozen or more restarts?

I'm about to do my annual Windows reinstall, but this time I'd like to
do it totally unattended, without a bunch of restarts.

The last time I installed XP Pro, I had to restart my system at least
a dozen times while attempting to get all the latest updates from
Windows Update.

Is there any way to avoid this?

Sure you can do an unattended install, but for one computer it's not really
worth it in terms of time. You have to create an answer file etc.
Unattended install are really for multiple computer installations. Look at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314459 for information.

I recently installed XP Pro SP2 from CD, then needed around 80 updates - it
may be nearer a hundred now. No restart needed until all were installed.
