Reinstall SP2 from Dos/command prompt

Good Afternoon,

I hope everyone is doing fine. Is there a way to re-install SP2 from dos or
command prompt.
My PC crashed after I ran the disk cleanup tool and now I can't boot. I
want to see if I can re-install Windows XP SP2 from a command prompt to put
back some system files the wizard must have deleted.
Can anyone tell me? Thanks!

Sincerely,

The Disk Cleanup tool doesn't remove system files. Something else must
have been wrong with your computer or you used a different tool. You
can boot with the XP CD and go into Recovery Console if you just want
to copy some files via the commandline. I'm not sure that will work for
you, but it can't hurt to try. If that doesn't work, do a Repair
Install. Here are links to walk you through both:

Thanks for the reply. Will give it a shot. I had a beta version of the new
Windows OneCare installed, don't know if that had anything to do with it or
not. I just know I ran the disk cleanup wizard today and I got those errors
about different version dlls and insert xp sp2 cd and other KB6XXXX cds and
I didn't have it so I hit cancel. Once I rebooted it hasn't worked since.
Hope the repair install works!
Is there a way to just re-run the xp SP2 install? I can't even get into
Windows XP only the command prompt and recovery mode prompt. Thanks again!

Try a System Restore from the "Safe Mode", or, "Safe Mode with a command prompt"

Windows doesn't boot at all, so I can go into safe mode. Thanks for the
reply!

I'm attempting to repair the install. Setup copied the files to my hard
drive and then it rebooted.
I got the prompt...'Press any key to boot from CD' and I DID NOT HIT A KEY.
So Windos XP screen came up, then entered setup. It stopped almost
immediately stating needed
'asms' folder. For some reason it had the following on the location box:
GLOBALROOT\DEVICE\CDROM0\I386
and it stops. I try entering D:\I386 AND OK and nothing happens. I try
C:\I386 and other drive letters and nothing happens. When I hit cancel it
exits setup. For some reason nothing I put in the location box for where
the file is located works. Should I try to re-run the repair setup and do
it again? I know the ASMS folder is in the I386 directory. I took the CD
out and put it in another machine and WHOOP there it is. Now why the
Windows Setup can't find it, I don't know.

It appears the only location that I can enter is the A: drive. When I enter
that, I see the drive light come on. But when I enter other drive letters,
nothing seems to happen. I'm in the Windows Setup repair mode after the
reboot and it's asking for the XP Setup CD. It's in the drive, but it can't
seem to find it.

Then, as I suspected, you have more wrong with your computer than just a
problem with Disk Cleanup. Make sure all drives can be seen in the
BIOS. You know your skills the best; my recommendation is that you take
the machine to a local professional (not your equivalent of
BigStoreUSA) and have them deal with it.

I'm sure it's too late to help you, but I had the exact same problem, and
after an hour on the phone with Dell support, gave up and reformatted my hard
drive. Now I'm up again, I find Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 311755 and
other comments on line as to how this is a known problem where the only drive
recognized at this point is drive A and you have to edit the registry to make
the computer aware of your CD drive even though the installer has just copied
hundreds of files from the very CD drive. Way to go Microsoft, Dell, etc.!!!!
