Reinstall Left 2 copies of XP Home

I just reinstalled XP Home on a computer I've had for several years now. The
reinstall went smoothly, but now, when I boot up, I am given the option to
select between two versions of XP. The first version, which is the default,
is the nice, new reinstall. So, if I do nothing, it boots to this in 30
seconds. The second version, is the old XP that I wanted to get rid of.

So, why are there two copies of XP now, and can I get rid of the old XP
without too much trouble.

Thanks

I have two installations of XP on the same partition
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/xpfaq.html#20

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not work for you, then:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then read similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Do you know if both installations are on same partition or hard drive?
Editing boot.ini will only remove dual boot option. Will not remove
unnecessary files!!
