I have instructions on how to make a backup copy of Windows Registry,
but where will I find instructions on how to restore the registry
with the backup files on the Desktop if anything goes wrong?
See here for some information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756
If you backed up your registry with the Registry Editor, do NOT use that to
import back into the registry to fix something; it doesn't work that way;
you'll only end up with a real mess! See the link above.
In XP, to back up the whole registry you can use:
XP's backup program to back up the "System State". THAT you CAN
Restore and it'll put everything back the way it was.
or, if you've imaged the drive, use that to recover the System State,
assuming you saved it.
or, creating a Restore Point (start; programs; accessories;system
tools; system restore ) is akin to backing up the reigistry, too. Then if
you need to, you can simply go back to that restore point if you should need
it.
You didn't bother to mention what your "instructions" said on how to back up
the registry, but unless they're along the lines of the above, be very
careful. There are different ways to do it.
