registry? virus? help!

HI ALL,

2 days ago, I suddenly ecountered this problem:

whenever i startup my computer, right after i log into winxp, the
following error message appears:

"windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not
have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

with a "1" as the title of the error message popup box.

then whenever i open any .EXE files, it wont work. it gives the
following error message:

"Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe'. Make sure
you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file,
click the Start button, and then click Search."

this doesnt happen only with iTunes, it happens with EVERY SINGLE .EXE
files.

therefore i've looked around the internet and i came across this virus
call the "SirCam virus".
I've tried to follow through their several instructions from different
sources (Trendmicro, f-secure, etc.) I can't solve it... apparently
when i do their command prompt thing and search, then delete the
sirc32.exe or scam32.exe file, it replies as "cannot find file" etc.

I tried to fun my updated AVG virus scanner, and no virus can be found,
as i looked through the internet, people suggested several tools to
use, but i cant use any of them cuz they are all EXE files..

so I'm really stuck here and i dunno what to do!

can anyone please help me?

on a side note, I cant execute the EXE programs, but I can load their
program files, for example, i cant open microsoft word itself, but i
can open a saved word document and use it normally, and this same goes
for other programs..

I tried to go into safe mode, but the same error messages appear, so i
cant run any exe in safe mode either..

THANKS A LOT

ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!!

Your not alone. I also am experiencing this problem.

I found it interesting that you mentioned Itunes. My problem started
immediately after I downloaded the Itunes installer.

Most of my icons have lost there respective images. They look like the
standard un-associated file-types. Desktop icons open the "open with" dialog
when clicked.

As mentioned in the previous post, I also can not open executables. However
I can also open an application by clicking files that were created with that
application. Also when right clicking on the system root drive I was able to
launch anti-virus software which returned no results that indicate a virus.

Please help!

Mike are you posting a response to the original poster (OP) or asking for

Can you open regedit.exe?

If so, look for key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile

and examine the shell/open/command value. It should read: "%1" %*

Have you tried Start Menu | Run?
