Registry to Large

Hi,

I have been having problems with rebooting my machine in
the form of "missing or Corrupt Winnt\System32
\Config\System.ced" So I have used Microsoft support link
below.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=269075

Once I have booted it suggests I Reduce the Size of the
System Hive, so following the instructions, I get as far
as No. 8 "In the Key Name Box type system.old..." and to
this I get the reply "Registry Editor could not accomplish
the requested operation".
If you can explain (in simple terms) why I get this
message, or how I can continue, I would be grateful as I
am currently unable to switch off my machine. (without
hassle on reboot!)

I have Win2000 prof 3 - No virus - drives C: & D:

It's a generic error message. The file you're trying to open may also be
damaged. You may need to boot the recovery console and copy the file again.

That's another section specific to a different problem in that
article. I think you should entirely skip that "Reduce the Size of
the System Hive" section unless you happen to have dozens of Shares
or more.

If you did the steps in Recovery Console and have successfully booted
and logged in (which it sounds like you have), stop. Go to the
System Properties, Advanced, Performance Options, Change then check
the existing size for the registry. If the MAX size is 10-50 percent
larger leave it there. If needed (at or near the MAXimum size)
_increase_ the size say 20%.

Next, go to "Backup" (ntbackup.exe) and do a ERD backup ensuring that
"Also backup the registry to..." is checked. This is a fast method
to refresh the backup copy of the registry hive files on disk against
any future need.

Watch the registry existing size (as above) for a while to ensure
that you are not seeing significant growth in the registry size.
Which could indicate another problem.

You _may_ need to re-install SP/Patches/or hardware support if the
backup was not recent.
