I'm running Windows XP Home Edition and I think I am having a problem with my
registry. I purchased and installed NSW 2006, but I kept getting an error
when I selected the autoprotect option. Anyway, in their attempt to resolve
the issue four different support reps from Symantec had me alter the
registry. After the last changes were in place, I attempted to reinstall
NSW. It wouldn't let me finish the installation. Now I can't install any
new programs and programs like Windows Media Player have quit working
properly. It attempts to load codecs to play certain files, but it says it
fails. I tried to manually install codecs, but as I stated before, I cannot
install anything. I can't reinstall Media Player either, due to the same
fact. I have tried installing several programs, both from disc and
downloads, and nothing will install. Several of them quit while trying to
register dll and other files.
All this happened immediately after the changes to the registry. My main
problem is that they also had me run the W32.Klez removal tool. This program
recommends shutting off the restore option before running, which I did. When
you shut off the restore it also removes any saved restore points, so I don't
have any restore points to go back to. I've contacted Symantec, but they
said either I followed the instructions wrong or the rep made the wrong
changes. Either way, I have no idea what the registry should look like at
this point.
Is there any way to fix this? Thanks so much for any help you could provide.
