registry problem

Hi all,

Ok, i'm a novice at all this so please be gentle.

When I started up my desktop this morning I got the following
messge :

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt :
\WINDOWS\system32\config\SYSTEM

I have tried to boot into safe mode but it wont let me and I tried to
restore last known configuration but that didn't work either. I dont
have the original disk with windows xp as it came pre-installed. Is
there anyway I can sort this out? My laptop also have xp home on
it, can I use some files off there?

Thanks in advance to all that help, it is very much appreciated.

Take care,

Ewan

Hi niceguy,

I would normally recommend following the instructions in this MSKB article
to resolve the problem:

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from
starting
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=307545

HOWEVER, if you read the first paragraph in the "Warning" section, it may
not be in your best interest to use the procedure in that MSKB article, as it
sounds like your computer has an OEM-installed operating system (the
operating system was pre-installed by the computer manufacturer). You may
want to contact the computer manufacturer's tech support to see if they can
recommend a solution for that error.

Regards,
