Registry key locator

In the Vista registry the left hand column lacks a reference to what item
is being displayed in the right hand window. I.E.: It is difficult to know
what left hand branch is the parent of what is seen at the right...

There is a minor reg hack that places a green ball, with a pointer inside,
on the active left hand item, but I cannot locate that info.

Anyone recall where the .reg file for this useful modification can be had?

Post here if you find it. I can always figure out what I'm looking
for by checking the taskbar, but what you mention would make things
much simpler.

Substitute "status bar" for "taskbar". If you don't see one, enable
it in "View".

Why not just use the TAB key to switch the highlight back and forth between
the selected items in the left and right pane? The idjut programmers at
Microsoft removed the code that changes the treelist icon to show which key
is open, and the highlight in the left column will never win any awards for
being as easy to spot as was the case in XP, but it's there.

Solid suggestion, Joe...

Yet the arrow tweak is mighty helpful. I just wish I could remember
where I saw it.^

Sounds like a plan to ME :)

Just tried it. MUCH simpler than looking for a reg hack.

THANKS.

Any chance this is what you were looking for?

See the note about Regedit at the end of the page. The suggested procedure
doesn't involve a Registry change (it edits the icon resource in Regedit
directly). I've not tested this on Vista, but I suspect that it would not
solve your problem since appearances indicate that Vista's version of
Regedit is not changing the icon in the left pane when you select a key.

Thanks for the pointer, Joe, but no, that's not the one. The item that
I saw, and am using in Vista was a very simple and effective registry entry.
