Registry issue

N

Nate Rosenthal

I am trying to open a .doc file and I get "this file type is blocked from
opening in this version by your registry policy setting". I googled this
error message and got taken to the microsoft site, where it told me to do a
registry change. I tried to do so in HKCU, but did not find Security under
Word, thus no FileOpenBlock.

I realize that by changing the registry, I could leave myself open to
outside forces, so my intent is to open this file, save it and then change it
back.

I have SP3, BTW

If you re-read the link - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922849 you will
see that if the entry is not present you need to create it. Whether you will
be any less secure after changing it rather depends on whether you are in
the habit of opening other people's unsolicited Word documents.

Instead of manually editing the registry, use the UnblockWord.reg and
RestoreBlockingWord.reg files that are linked in Method 1 at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938810. Then it's just a matter of
double-clicking the proper icon to change the behavior at will.

I assume the the unblock will change the registry to open the file and the
restore will return the regsitry back the way it was. That sounds like the
safest way to do it. Thanks

Wow. That was easy. Opened it saved it so that my version will open it. I
assume that the restore put my registry back the way it was and not subject
to intrusions.

Thank you.

To check, open the registry at the key you couldn't find before and see what
it has been reconfigured to show.
The chances of 'intrusions' are minuscule even with the option set.

I used the restore and it won't open the file I was trying to open, so I
guess it is back the way it was. I relaize the intrusions are miniscule, but
if it is that easy to unblock and restore, I'll do it as I need to do it.
Thanks for the help.
