registry corruption problem

J

Jon

I appear to have a corrupt Windows 2000 Pro registry and was given
instructions on this newsgroup.
This is where I have got to (explanation of the original problem is at the
bottom):

I've downloaded the chkreg util and created my xp boot disks modifyed the 6
disk,
restarted with disk 1 in gradually put each disk in as it asks for it. It
then gives me the option of installing xp, system recovery (repair) or to
quit

Which option should I be selecting, repair I assume?

------------------------------------------

From a cold startup my Windows 2000 system starts to bootup. It gets to the
graphical windows 2000 start up screen (the white blocks get right to the
end) just before the GUI appears and it reboots. It does this 3 times and
then goes into Windows normally. A blue screen briefly appears with the
following information before it reboots:

STOP: c0000218 (registry file failure)
The Registry cannot load the hive (file):
\systemRoot\System32\config\SOFTWARE
or it's log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent or not writable
Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system technical support group.

When I finally get into Windows The event log has recorded the following:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0xc0000218
(0xe166e148, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). Microsoft Windows 2000
[v15.2195]. A dump was saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini010405-01.dmp.
Any ideas what this might be to do with?

It always happens each day on a cold startup. It doesn't tend to happen if
I reboot it whilst it's been on for a while.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

Sounds more like hardware failure than registry failure. If the registry was
corrupt, then it would never startup.

This sounds more like a hardware issue as the cause. Perhaps
examine all the BIOS settings, re-seat all the cards and cables.
How many devices are in the system and could the power supply be
failing or overtaxed? Possibly boot first to a DOS diskette/CD and
see if a "warm up" period corrects the problem. If you have
recently added/changed hardware, start there. I suggest a
hardware group in an effort to determine what's *different* when
your system is "cold".

It does appear to only happen when starting from cold (i.e when I get back
from work in the evening). I've not had it happen if i restart the machine
after it's booted up.

Any way you can think of for me to determine what the hardware problem might
be?

Thanks,

Jon

Nothing really in the event logs the first item in the system log when
booting up is:
-----------------------------

Then I have two warning entries:

No other warnings appear.

If this still looks like a hrdware failure somewhere I will start removing
items e.g memory and try and work out what is failing?

Thanks,

Make sure write cache is not enabled.

Yes I made this change a long time ago after reading about problems with
write cache.
