There is no real reason to do so ad hoc.

There are some utilities which can help clean up portions of the
registry, relatively safely. I've been using cCleaner, and Spybot for
a few years now and haven't had a problem. I have heard tho' that a
number of utilities out there are variable - some if used improperly
can damage registry entries.
