Registry cleaner/fix

Hopefully this is the correct place to present this, please direct me to the
corrrect location if this is not right.

I have a peculiar problem with my Dell Inspirion 9400 laptop; and was told
that
registry cleaner would fix it!! After reading the MS-MVP comments on reg
cleaners
I am at a loss where to look, Dell support has not been very helpful.
Here's the problem:
I have an internal CD-DVD writer and an External CD-DVD writer
when I open a window to browse files on either drive, it works fine;
when I open the other drive, the first windows closes and selected drive
appears. I can not have both drives open at the same time or copy files
from one to the other. OCcasionally one or both drives see a formatted
DVD-RW as blank or bad, after reinserting, when it worked minutes before.
I have deleted the upperfilters, etc, and checked DMA and made sure IRQ
was fine; and have removed and re-detected the drives, all to no avail.

This is the "slim" build. No toolbars, add-ins, etc. If you are afraid of
"phone home", then uncheck the "check for updates" box. Suggest saving the
changes until you get to know it and feel comfortable.

looking at the problem that I am experiencing; can you suggest a better
solution? I have tried removing both drives and have windows re-detect
them and have checked that DMA is working.
