I'm sure I read that someone recommended that it is always better to
register your domains with a different company to who you get your hosting
from. I can not remember there reasoning, so if anybody has any options on
this I would be interested to hear them.

Hi John,

Personally I register most of my domains through GoDaddy
http://www.godaddy.com/ but there are many other places as well. It isn't a
requirement to use any registrar service or host for that matter for domain
registering. The main things to be aware of when registering are to make
sure it is in your name..and also watch carefully for little "extra things"
the registering companies might want to sell you..that you might not need.

one extra I do like is the anonyomous address option - now my office address & phone are not plastered all over whois. i thought that was worth 5 bucks :)

rumor has it (emphasis on rumor as in forums rumor, so take it fwiw)
that this feature (i.e., anonymity) may be banned as an anti-spam
measure...

really? i wonder why that would be? the registrar has the real info still, and my real name is still there all it does is hide the address & phone number and I think it aliasissses an email address through the registrar. I could be wrong of course.

There are so many rumors stated as facts in forums that I am skeptical
until someone shows me written authoritative documentation but this one
claims to be based on some legislator's perception that this handicaps
the disgruntled public from being able to track down spammers...

As I said, take it FWIW...

I register my domains with the company I host with.
Reason being, is that quite a few hosts require registering with them in order
to host your account, and they will charge you an annual fee charge to transfer
the domain. ( Even though the additional year is added on to the time
remaining )

Our domains are all registered to our company, and in the owners name. That
way we have control. We host our own webs, but give the technical contact
as our ISP.

There is no reason that a host should require this, other than to try an keep you from switching
host later.

I'm going to agree with Thomas Rowe. I don't like having my domain
registration with my hosting because I don't want to he tied to a particular
host. If the hosting company doesn't work out I can change hosts in 12-36
hours by changing the domain's DNS at my registrar. If the domain hosting
manages the DNS it takes longer because they don't usually give you access
to the registrar's control panel by default so they can try to talk you out
of changing hosting.

While most reputable hosting companies will honor your request to transfer
but I've been involved in two cases where the domain name was not correctly
registered by the person providing the hosting. One was corrected (after 2
months) but in the other case the domain name was lost to my client because
the company that registered it went out of business and true was no one to
authorize the transfer. Because it had been improperly registered in the
name of their defunct web designer we were unable to manage the domain name
(registered with Network Solutions). Network Solutions would not correct the
domain name owner without permission from the person who wrongly registered
if in their own name. This was despite providing them with a copy of the
contract between my client and their former designer showing how it should
have been registered.

As a result like Tom Pepper Willet I use my preferred registrar (not Retook
Solutions) and always register the domain in the client's name.

A host doesn't need to transfer or have anything to do with the domain name
registration. All they need to do is provide you with the nameservers for
their hosting a the IP address if you have a dedicated IP.

DO NOT ever, ever register your domain with the same company that is
your host. This is from personal experience and I could be wrong, but
I do not think any company has any business having control over your
domain. After three years of great service Sharp Web Service has
disappeared off the face of the earth leaving many clients high and
dry (and very po'ed). Now if we had registered our domain with this
company it could be weeks, months or even never before we could get
the domain transferred since no one is answering emails or answering
the phone. I am frantically trying to find a new host this weekend and
I practically fell on my knees to give thanks when I found the
paperwork we had printed out that gives the company's name of who we
listed with. I don't know much about who we listed it with, I just
hope they are not servers and just domain sellers so they don't fly
off in the middle of the night.
