Regedit

I have to type regedit.exe in to the run box to get the registry editor to
run. If I type regidit without the exe It would appers that a programme
called regedit.com runs. This is also the problem when I type cmd in to the
run box. How can I change this that regidit brings on the registry editor.

Rename the .com versions to .bad - they are probably
malware. Under WinXP, only a very small number of
programs have a .com extension.

Your machine has malware on it. See the following site for steps to
take to get the machine cleaned - http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm.

As a quick start, delete regedit.com and cmd.com from your machine.

You almost certainly have a virus. Regedit.com is implicated in a
number.

You should update your virus definitions and run a full anti-virus scan.

If you do not have an anti-virus programme a highly respected freeware
anti-virus is
AVG.
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10342876.html
It automatically updates virus definitions.

You should also have an anti- spyware programme. Do you have one? If not
try:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Again it's free.

Once you have removed the virus you may still have problems. If this is
so please post to this thread so that it is clear what is the history of
your problem.

Your virus scan result is a surprise. Some viruses disable the
anti-virus programme.

Download Stinger from here and run it to make sure that
A-V-disabling viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

Fits on a floppy which you can write protect before running. This is
useful if the computer does
not have a CD drive as some older computers do not. It would be better
to download to another machine and put on the floppy before introducing
the disk to the infected machine. Make sure you run the anti-virus scan
in safe mode.

Hi,

I am in the process of recovering from Trojan.LodAV.a and Trojan.Lodear.B.
These trojans were AV disabling and I had to re-install NIS after deleting
the infected files. As part of the clean-up, I need to edit my registry due
to some spyware (Spyware.Perfect) being detected. When I try to RUN regedit
I get an error message stating "Windows cannot find 'regedit'. Any
suggestions? I have tried all of the extensions: .exe, .com, etc.

Thanks,
Duane

6. Restore regedit.exe from your original Windows installation disk.
Click Start > Run.
Type cmd
Click OK.
Insert your Windows Installation CD into your CD-ROM drive.
Navigate to the drive corresponding to your CD-ROM drive (e.g. if your
CD-ROM uses drive letter e: you would type e:)
To copy regedit onto your system type:

copy \I386\regedit.exe c:\Windows\regedit.exe
