Reformat of one computer causing problems on another

A

AMK

So here's the pickle.

After my girlfriend's computer was reformatted (for unrelated reasons
having to do with random restarting), my own computer -- which is
connected to the same wireless network -- started experiencing
problems. The problems consist of loss of wireless connection; as well
as frequent freezing. By loss of wireless connection, I mean that the
connection (usually, but not always) initially connects, and lets me
browse the Internet for a while (usually ranging from a minute to an
hour), at which point the data stops going through. (The connection
still shows up as active in my system tray, but it appears that nothing
is going back and forth, and none of the websites are responding.)
Hitting "Repair Connection" usually (but not always) restores
connectivity, but even then only temporarily, at which point I have to
go through the process again. After I do this a few times (and
sometimes even before), the computer stops responding at all (cursor
stops moving, complete freeze) and I have to completely restart the
system. This started the day my girlfriend reformatted her computer
and reinstalled all her software. Her computer is not experiencing any
of these issues.

Both machines run XP Pro SP2, with latest patches. Both are laptops;
hers a Dell Inspiron 600m, mine a Toshiba Satellite 5205-S703. Both
also run NAV2005, Ad-Aware, and SpyBot with latest definitions, none of
which report any shenanigans on either system. The router, which
connects to a cable modem from RCN, is a DI-524. Security used to
consist solely of MAC address filtering, but I have temporarily
disabled that while troubleshooting this issue (to no avail). Both IP
addresses are assigned by the router's DHCP. The only other devices
that connect to the router are 1) a USB printer server on a wired
Ethernet port, which has been there since the dawn of time, and 2) my
girlfriend's iPaq, which is (wirelessly) connected to our router only
occasionally.

Any ideas?
