Referencing a bookmark that has a style applied

I have a bookmark for NAME at the beginning of my template. I created a
style based on the Default Paragraph Font called stylerefname and applied it
to the bookmark. I put a StyleRef field that references the stylerefname
style in a header so that when I enter the NAME in the bookmark, it
automatically gets entered at the top of every subsequent page.

My problem is that at the end of my template I have a REF field that
references the NAME bookmark. When the NAME gets inserted into the REF
field, it brings with it the style stylerefname that I added to the bookmark.
The result is, if the name has multiple parts (First Middle Last), then the
header on that particular page with the REF field picks up the style from the
REF field and only part of the name (usually Last name but sometimes Middle
too) gets into the header on that page.

I have been able to resolve this at home using Word 2007 by setting the
"Pasting within the same document" setting to "match destination formatting"
or paste "text only." But I haven't been able to do this when I use my
template at work which uses Word 2003. I've been able to get around this in
Word 2003 by putting non-breaking spaces between the different parts of the
name in the bookmark or REF field, or by removing the style stylerefname from
the REF field after updating the field, but both of these are kind of a pain
to do every time.

Does anyone know a way to get the bookmarked text to insert into the REF
field in Word 2003 without the applied style? I've tried applying a
different style to the REF field but it doesn't seem to work. I've also
tried deleting the \*MERGEFORMAT from the REF field but it doesn't seem to
work either.

Remove the mergeformat switch and add a charformat switch in its place. Then
update the field.
