References lost in linked files?

I have a large number of small source files that I use to generate larger
documents. Each source file contains some figures with captions and some text
that points to these captions by way of cross-references.
When I include the source file in my final file, everything seem to work OK
except for the reference to the caption. In my source file, I generally use a
statement like "please see [here I put a cross reference to the caption of
the figure I want to point to, including the label and the text of the
caption]". However, this gets lost in the final file. I only get "please see".
Does anyone knows what I should do to make this work?

You unfortunately don't mention the version of Word, or how you're "including"
the files. (I can guess, but that's always unsatisfactory)

Have you tried selecting the text and pressing F9 to force the field update?
Does that work, or do you get an error message? (Note, try three or four times
if you get an error message)
