Redeploying Office 2003 sp1

H

Harrison Midkiff

Hello:

I am in the process of redeploying my Office 2003 with sp1. I created a
software installation point on my network when Office 2003 came out and
deployed it. When sp1 came out I rolled the update into my installation
point. I then went back to my GPO where I install Office 2003, right
clicked on the packages and choose "Redeploy Application". This causes
Office 2003 to reinstall as if it were a new application. This works for
the most part but several of my machine run the update but when I click
Help/About to check the version they still show the original version. If I
UNC to my installation point and run the *.msi file Office 2003 installs and
then it is sp1. Strange....

Does anyone know what might be going on here? Thanks

Are you sure all your machine accounts are in the OU that you deployed
Office, and that it is not an access rights issue?

Hi Harrison,

In addition to the suggestion Denis has provide, there are other
possibilities:

1. Check the problematic users are in the correct OU you have deployed the
SP1.
2. The problematic users have manually installed Office 2003, not via this
group policy.

I suggest you check the following link to deploy Office 2003 and SP1:

s/mnta01.mspx

Any update, let us get in touch!

Rebecca:

Thanks for your reply....

I did see this document when I first starting deploying my Office 2003 SP1.
I know that some machines had Office installed via a ghost image and some
were installed via a GPO. Either way I would assume if I update the
package, add the computers to the GPO and then redeploy the app it would
reinstall Office 2003 with SP1. What is very strange is on about 30% of the
computers I see the "Installing managed software Microsoft Office 2003".
But, when I look at the version it is the original one. If I UNC to the
packages folder and run the msi file it is then SP1.

I seem to have a new problem of users having the GPO's install twice.
Yesterday I set everything up and some people rebooted to get the software
installs. The installs ran. Today they started there computers and got the
installs again.

Any ideas?

Hi Harrison,

I believe this issue is related to the ghosted image.

Please use the following steps to isolate this issue.
Step 1: Remove Office 2003

------------------
To remove Office 2003 and any stand-alone Office products that may be
present on your computer, follow these steps.

Microsoft Windows 2000

1. Click "Start", point to "Settings", and then click "Control Panel".

2. Double-click "Add/Remove Programs".

3. In the list of currently installed programs, click "Microsoft Office
2003".

4. Click "Remove".

5. Click "Yes" to confirm.

Microsoft Windows XP

1. Click "Start", click "Control Panel".

2. Double-click "Add or Remove Programs".

3. In the list of currently installed programs, click "Microsoft Office
2003".

4. Click "Remove".

5. Click "Yes" to confirm.

Repeat steps 3 through 5 for all stand-alone Office products that are
installed on your computer.

Delete Office Folders

---------------------

1. Start Microsoft Windows Explorer.

2. On the "Tools" menu, click "Folder Options", and then click the "View"
tab.

3. Click to select the "Show hidden files and folders" check box, and then
click "OK".

4. Delete the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office

5. Locate and open the following folder, if the folder is present:

<AppDataFolder>\Microsoft\Office\Data

Note The <AppDataFolder> is the \Application Data folder. The location of
this folder varies, depending on the version of Windows that is on your
computer.

6. Delete the following files, if they are present:
- Data.dat
- Data.bak

Delete the .tmp Files

---------------------

1. Quit all the programs that are running, and then restart your computer.

2. Click "Start", and then click "Run".

3. In the "Open" box, type "%temp%" (without the quotation marks), and then
click "OK".

4. Press CTRL+A to select all files, and then press DELETE to clear the
default Temporary folder. Note You cannot delete files that are being used
by currently running processes.

Rename the Config.msi Folder
----------------------------

1. Start Windows Explorer.

2. Rename the folder Config.msi to Config.old. This folder is typically

located at the root of drive C, for example; C:\Config.msi.

3. On the "Tools" menu, click "Folder Options", and then click the "View"
tab.

4. Click to clear the "Show hidden files and folders" check box, and then
click "OK".

Remove Office-related Keys from the Registry
--------------------------------------------

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using
Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

1. Click "Start", and then click "Run".

2. In the "Open" (without the quotation marks) box, type "regedit" (without
the quotation marks), and then press ENTER.

3. Delete the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office

-and-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office

Step 2: Apply GPO
==============
Reboot the computer to see if GPO can be applied to the machine and install
Office 2k3 with SP1.

If the machine can successfully install Office 2k3 SP1, we can make sure
this issue is related to the ghost.

I look forward to your reply.

Hi Harrison,

I understand. Ghosted office will not be updated by the GPO.

If you have any update, let us get in touch!

Rebecca:

Thanks for your reply.

I have pushed forward with my Office 2003 SP1 redeployment. I have had
mixed results with it. I should have the deployment completed by next
week. Then I am going to audit Office to make sure SP1 is installed.
The ones that have problems I am going to have to do manually.
