Recurrent HD Problem Windows XP

Keith

I have a Intel 2.4 with a Foxconn 650 board running windows XP pro
with all the latest service packs installed and for the third time my
hard drive has failed in the last four months. What might be causing
this problem it does use IDE for the HD connection? I have purchased
new hard drives each time with the same damage to the HD's.

Thanks for any tips.

Type of damage may indicate the cause. Lightning strike? I would doubt
the issue is related to Windows XP.

Heat can be a problem.... the bigger the drive the hotter they run.

I hope these drives were under guarantee... you shouldn't have to be paying
for a new one each and every time if they are fresh.

I was quite surprised to find that
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835888603 lowered the
temp on my drive by 12C.

While you're there, if you look at the reviews on different hard drives, you
may find that folks have proven that some are more likely to fail than
others. I am a great believer in reviews by real users.

Well the CPU temp on my computer runs from 50-60 C and the system
temp is around 30-40C. Could these be leading to the hardware
failures?

I had a hard drive problem recently in which the drive crashed about 4 times
over a period of about 5 weeks.
Maxtor's diagnostics showed nothing wrong with the drive, so I used the
following software to determine what the problem (in my case it was the
drive electronics and not the physical media that was failing).

To exercise the drive, PassMark's BurninTest:
http://www.passmark.com/products/bit.htm
To monitor the low level S.M.A.R.T. information, SpeedFan:
http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php
SpeedFan has the option to compare your actual drive results in real time
with data on it's web site, this is what helped me to determine my
particular issue.

Also in consideration of the fact that you have had multiple drives that
failed I would check the Power Supply voltages to the drive.

You should be able to replace the HDDs under guarantee. Some manufacturers
have started to give a full 5 year guarantee once again.

Also, enable SMART in the BIOS and use a program like HDDLife to monitor the
hard drive health.

The free ver of Everest home can provide a whole slew of info, including HD
temps. if the mobo is so equipped w/sensors, see my specs below, generated
with Everest Home ver 2.20..

Are you partitioning and formating the HD's with XP's Disk Management..?
What make and model HD..? PSU wattage..?

Its very unlikely that software had anything to do with your hard drive
failing. I hope they paid for the replacement because an hdd should last
a number of years not months. They do wear out but most likely there was
a flaw in the ones you had.

Either you are very unlucky with Hard Drives or there might be someting
wrong with the motherboard connector. I had a floppy connector go bad
but it just doesn't work. It didnt' damage the drive. A short could do
it. Could you have a short in your system?
