Recovery Console

XP Home SP 3

In order to remove a virus I was guided through a removal process that
included activating the Recovery Console.

It worked but I wonder just what it was that I did. Did I compromise my
system by opening it out to a third-party who could access it at will?
Should I uninstal it now?

Also, During the whole process which included downloading several programmes
and running them, I ended up with a desktop.ini folder on my desktop which
reads inside '

[LocalizedFileNames]
Windows Media Player.lnk=@C:\WINDOWS\inf\unregmp2.exe,-4

I wonder what this is all about and what I should do with it. I tried to
delete but it told me that it was a system file.

I expct this had somethng to do with the temporary Desktop used for the
Recovery Console, but am puzzled at what Windows Media has to do with it.

Any help explaining will be much appreciated.

Who guided you? Does this have something to do with the Aumha forum? If
so, if you post a link to your thread there, we'll be able to know what
you are referring to.

That depends on what you mean by the phrase "opening it out to a
third-party who could access it at will." What eactly did you do? Or if
this is all covered in another thread, just post a link to that thread.
Should I uninstal it now?

Should you uninstall *what* now?

Yes, through the Aumha foru. Is that ok?

I never used Recovery Console and wonder if it is now an open door to
outsiders who can get in in my computer.

Here it goes. I hope I did not do something stupid..

I doubt very much you did anything stupid! That is a reputable forum.
But since you didn't post a link to *your* thread, I have no idea which
one of 2,048 topics are yours!

So, again, if you'd like us to know what you are referring to, please
post a link to your thread. :)

No, not at all. You have to boot the computer to the Recovery Console
and you have to physically be at the computer to use it. Once you exit
the Recovery Console and reboot the computer that is it, no one can use
it unless it is booted up.

Sorry, I gave you the main page... let's try again:

You worry too much. :)

That's a reputable site and ComboFix is a reputable program.
Furthermore, Windows Recovery Console is part of Windows.

If you are nervous about that executable (unregmp2.exe), upload it to
this site:

http://virusscan.jotti.org/

You will need to navigate to C:\windows\inf.

But I'm sure it's fine. :)

The reason you still see this dektop.ini folder is because you neglected
to hide your hidden files. This is what you should do:

Open My Computer | Tools | Folder Options... | View

Under "Hidden files and folders," select "Do not show hidden files and
folders." Also, check the box next to "Hide protected operating system
files (Recommended)." Click OK.

Regarding the Recovery Console, it won't hurt to leave it, and it won't
hurt to uninstall it. If you decide to delete it, instructions are here:
