Since I read many posts that did not address the topic I wanted to
post a success story.
Today I replaced a hard disk that had several partitiions.
Specifically, there was a J: and H: on the disk as well as Linux. My
boot disk was G:. When I replaced the unformatted drive, GRUB (from
Linux) intercepted my boot process and since Linux was removed the
computer froze with "GRUB" on my screen.
I placed my XP CD into the drive and asttempted a recovery console
repair. All went fine until I noticed Windows on F:. I knew this
would cause problems but I first issued a FIXMBR to repair the GRUB
problems. I did not see a way in recovery console (yes, I could use
disk management but when you cannot boot it is a bit of a problem) to
change letters. So...
I ran DISKPART (no parameters) and created a 10 MB partition on the
new disk. I hoped that when I booted XP recovery console again, XP
would enumerate the disks and include the primary partition _ahead_ of
my F:. On reboot it worked fine and I am typing on my previously
installed version of Windows.
Hopefully this information is helpful to others!
