Recovery Console Admin Password

L

L. Arellano

Hi,

I've just installed the recovery console as one of my
startup options (from my WinXP Pro upgrade CD). Anyway,
upon attempting to start it, I'm asked for the
administrator password. Given that I'm the only account
and am the Administrator, I purposely didn't choose one.
Thus, I simply hit <enter> and was given the 'invalid
password' message. So then I went back into Windows and
gave my (administrator) account a password. Upon trying
to open the console again and this time entering the new
password, I still got the 'invalid password' message --
i.e., it won't let me in!!! Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thx. L.

There is a difference with you having an account with administrator
privileges and THE "administrator" account. When you load Windows XP and
reboot for the last time, you are presented with a screen where you type in
your name. The same screen has boxes for you to put in a password.

Note here that even if you place a password here, when you finally get into
Windows you will find that the account that you created by placing your name
on that screen does NOT have a password assigned to it.

That is because the password has been assigned to THE "administrator"
account.

It is this password that the repair console is looking for!

It is the one for the account *called* "Administrator" that is needed.
Start - Run the line
control userpasswords2
and there highlight Administrator and Reset Password
