Recovery CD

I have been advised by my Laptop manufacturer that I should use the Windows
XP recovery CD to reinstall the operating system. Could anyone please tell
me if this is a straight forward process and any difficulties that I may
incur. The problem is getting the Bluetooth to operate.

1. "Recovery CDs" are supposed to rewrite the hard drive the
way it was delivered from the factory to the retailer. The problem
is that this is not 100 per cent guaranteed and some brands
(e.g. HP) may be more or less reliable than others (e.g. Dell.)

2. When successful, recovery of the OS to factory conditions
may remove all custom (personal) settings and data files.
These can beforehand be exported to another drive (e.g. by
the Documents and Settings Wizard) and later reimported.
But if the main problem is configuring a Bluetooth device to
work this may be a cumbersome way of doing it.

Your Laptop manufacturer told you to restore your system
when you asked how to activate Bluetooth? Tell us who these
morons are!

This is the startup string for my Bluetooth:
"C:\Program Files\Toshiba\Bluetooth Toshiba Stack\TosBtMng.exe"

Please be more specific, how are you starting it. What happens?

Hi Ju.c

I have uninstalled the Toshiba Bluetooth stack and have tried to reinstall
without success. The driver will not install due to me not being able to
switch the bluetooth on. I have tried the switch on the front of the laptop
and also tried the Fn + F2 buttons. Don't know what else to try. Have you
experienced the same problems and how did you get it working again?

It is frequently straightforward, but in some cases starts with clearing the
hard disk. This means that all user data on the disk is also cleared.

You should check to see if this is the case, and whether it is or not, back
up *all* your data before proceeding. And be sure to verify that the
backed up files are restorable.

Hi ju.c

Well have had a good look at the Device manager, and it seems that a lot of
things are not the same. I will try and go through the items that are
incorrect and or missing.

1 Under the Bluetooth tab All that I have got is "Bluetooth RFCOMM
2 Under Network adapters I have got 2 Bluetooth items, 1, Bluetooth
personal area network-packet scheduler miniport and 2 Bluetooth personal
area network= Symantec Network security Miniport
3 Under Ports (Comm. +PLT) I have got the following, Comms 10,
11,12,20,21,22,40,42,6,7, these are all BT.
4 Under System Devices I have got nothing for any Bluetooth device
5 Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers again I have got nothing for any
Bluetooth device.

I would be very grateful if you could assist me in getting the necessary
items in to make it work.
Your help is appreciated.

That's your problem, points 4 & 5. The Bluetooth hardware
module is not being detected as installed. I don't know how
to fix that but I'll ask around. Keep searching and waiting,
don't give up yet!

My friend says to check that the Bluetooth Stack INF file (bth.inf)
exists, and if so to install it then restart. If it's not there then get it
from the Windows CD (or ask me to send it to you) and put it in
"C:\Windows\Inf" then restart. Windows should then find the
device and install the drivers. Then you could install the Toshiba
drivers.

So, open "C:\Windows\Inf" and check that "bth.inf" is in there. If
it is, right-click it and "Install". Or just enter this line in the Run box:

%WinDir%\system32\rundll32.exe setupapi.dll,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %WinDir%\inf\bth.inf

If it installs then restart and try to install the Toshiba Bluetooth
Stack. If you get an error that Windows cannot find
"C:\Windows\Inf\bth.inf" then find a copy and put it there.

Hi ju.c
Thanks for the info and I have looked as requested. I can find the
"C:\Windows\Inf But not the "bth.Inf" But lots of others like,, bth(2) /
bth(2).PNF / bth.pnf / bthpan / bthpan.PNF / bthprint /
bthprint,PNF / bthspp / bthspp,PNF Not sure where I can get the
"bth.inf" from I have done a find on the laptop but it doesn't seem that it
is there. Any Ideas for me?
Also done like you said in the run box , it comes up with a sign saying not
in the location maybe on a disc.

Thanks

So that sounds like your problem!

I'll upload the "bth.inf" file to MediaFire soon, I'll post again when
done.
