Recovering Address List

Guest

Hi,

Hi have done some cleanup in my folder and it seems I mistakenly remove my
address list. When I try to send an email, if I click the “To...†icon to
pick a name/contact, I get a message indicating: The address list could not
be displayed. The Contact folder associated with this address list could not
be opened; it may have been moved or deleted, or you do not have permissions.

Note that if I click the CONTACT tab/icon in my left pane, all my contacts
are present. Can I rebuilt/recover my address list using my contact entries ?

Thanks,

You did not remove anything. There is no "address list" in Outlook. The
error message already told you what you did. You moved the Contacts Folder
that the address book view was displaying. Tell the address book which
Contacts Folder you want it to show. Method depends on your version, which
you neglected to post, but the instructions have been posted here countless
times. I'm sure you can find the one for your version.

Hi,

Thanks for your response.

My version is 2003. Note however that I would appreciate if you could lead
me to the instructions you refer to. My frustration level is fairly high and
the patience to seek for it is very low.

Note that I have uninstalled and reinstalled my Suite of Office 2003 in hope
that this would fix the problem. My attempt was a complete failure. I t seems
that Office leaves trace of itself when you uninstall it and that only a disk
format will remove it.

If I may abuse your time, do you know if a utility exists to completely
remove Office 2003 in order to permit a CLEAN reinstall?

Removing and reinstalling Office is a waste of time. It never fixes anything
because your Outlook profile always remains so you won't lose any data.
It is not unusual for the Outlook Address Book to "lose track" of the
connection to its Contacts Folder when you move or import your PST or update
your Outlook version or operating system. Use the following steps to reset
the connection. Note that in some instances you may actually have to remove
the Outlook Address Book completely from your Profile, close Outlook, and
then re-add it before you can get it to work.

Make sure the Contact folder is enabled as an email address book. Right
click the Contacts folder, choose Properties then Outlook Address Book. Is
the box to enable as email address book checked?
If this is grayed out...Go to Tools | Email Accounts, choose View or change
existing directories or address book. Is the Outlook Address Book present?
If it isn't listed, add it and close and restart Outlook. If it is listed,
then remove it and close then restart Outlook and repeat these steps to add
it.

Hi Russ;

I am looking at your posting and hyperlinked article. My show as an E-0Mail
address book is grayed out. I cannot perform either step 1 or step 2 because
all of the referred to options are grayed out. My contacts (approx 400) are
in the "my contacts" folder in approx 5 different files. The show as an
address book is grayed out on all of them.

This worked okay in the older 2005 HP computer with O/L 2007 installed. I
utilized the transfer wizard. In the new "Vista" computer all appears to work
fine with O/L except showing addresses (or names) when I click the "to" -
"cc" or "bcc" boxes there are no address books listed.

Can you help?
Thank You'
Ron R.

Alas, Outlook 2007 on Vista won't allow you to remove and readd the Outlook
Address Book service. If you don't have the OAB service in your mail
profile, try adding it. If you do, you'll have to start with a new mail
profile.
