Recover outlook emails after corrupted profile

The user is on Windows XP using Outlook 2000.
The mail is being hosted by SBC. All emails are retrieved through the POP3
email server. We need about half a year of emails and the most SBC can
retrieve back at best is 14 days.

The issue is that I had overwrite the user’s profile with another profile. I
had made a terrible mistake of not archiving her emails into a PST file.
Because an archive was never done, I am unable to search for any PST or OST
files.

I had also tried the XP system restore, but that does not solve the problem.
It seems to restore documents or to the last state of when applications was
installed/uninstalled. If the user logs in and tries to run Outlook, it pops
up looking for the ‘PST’ files which does not exist.

These are very important emails and I’ve search all day on the net hoping to
get some info but not have any luck so I thought I give this forum a try.

My question is, if you are using Outlook 2000 and you retrieving emails thru
a POP3 account, and you never bother to archive it to your local computer
[but somehow it is no longer on the server] therefore it must be sitting on
your local disk somewhere.
Can anyone tell me what extension those emails could be under???
I mean every time you open Outlook, it must be looking into a certain
location to be able to bring up those emails for you right? What if a
profile is corrupted similar to my case or a hard drive crashes, is that
case, how do Outlook emails get retrieve if it was never archive to a PST or
OST files? I am only aware of these 2 extensions. I realized, I am repeating
myself, but it is very important that I get these emails recovered if
possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much.

Sincerely,

That would still be a pst-file. Archive only moves it to another pst-file.

When you say that you recreated the profile; do you mean the mail profile or
the user profile?

Either way; search for pst-files on your harddisk. By default they are
stored here;
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Once found connect to it by File-> Open-> Personal Data File...

Thank you so much for the quick reply.
The dumb thing i did was not just to rename the windows login user profile;
instead i had copy another user's windows profile on top of it.
i did check the location you suggested: C:\Documents and
Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application\ Data\Microsoft\Outlook and
also did thorough a search of the entire hard drive. The thing is, i think
by me copying another profile on top the user windows profile, it might have
clean out everything. If this is the case, is there still some way for me to
recover this user's emails? Again, windows XP restore doesnt seem to help.
What else can i do in this case where a user's windows profile has be
overwritten?? i think a hard disk crash would have been easier because at
least i know the PST file is still in tact as long as i can put it as a slave
drive to access the file.
Any suggestions would help.
thanks again.

Nope, then you've cleared it.

Note that XP restore isn't a backup tool and doesn't restore data as in
documents but configurations, system and program files.

Thanks again Robert.
At least i know what options or lack thereof is left.
I should have post this last question also on the last posting, instead of
going back and forth.

Final question is, we desparately need this emails back if possible.
however, according to you, because i have over written the windows profile,
it got
clean out.
If i were to send the Hard disk to a Data Recovery Center which could costs
around $400 or more, do you think they would be able to pull anything out??
But of course, if they can not, there would be no charges. But, do you
think this is even possible? or it is more a less a waste of time and this is
a close case?

Look forward to your final suggestion before I've to tell the user that it
is unrecoverable.

thank you again.

I expect very little result from that. The bigger the original pst-file the
more problematic the recovery would be. If you only recover a part of the
pst-file you would also need pst recovery tools to try to extract
recoverable parts of it. Scanpst.exe will most likely not give any result.
Also the more the system has been used after the deletion the harder
recovery is going to be.

So in general I wouldn't go through all the trouble but all depends on how
valuable the data to you is of course.
