Recording MP3 and WMA in Windows XP Pro?

Hi ... I would like to know if it is possible to record to MP3 and/or
WMA formats via the line in on my sound card, using stock software that
comes in the Windows XP Pro release? I'd like to rip some of my old
vinyl and cassette collection. The Sound Recorder goes to WAV, and I
don't know if it's possible to record to MP3 or WMA with Windows Movie
Maker or Windows Media Player. Anyone know?

If not, I would like to find a simple shareware or freeware solution
for this, that I can download from download.com or tucows.com. I'm
sure there are hundreds of choices out there. I don't need one of
these expensive bloatware programs. Suggestions anyone?

Thanks ........ Henry

I like Total Recorder from www.highcriteria.com. It's very simple to learn
and use and does a great job and when you're ready to get fancy it'll give
you complete control. They have a standard version and a pro version but
for what you want to do the standard version gives you everything you need.
It's a great little program.
