Recalculation upon opening a workbook

T

TY

When a workbook (WB1.xls) is already opened in automatic calculation mode,
does opening another workbook (WB2.xls) trigger recalcuation of WB1.xls?

This is not consistent though, if I open WB3.xls, it didn't trigger
recalculation of WB1.xls. Based on what factor does Excel decide to
recalculate?

Thanks.

Hi Teresa,

it works like this:

- Excel only has one calculation mode at a time regardless of how many
workbooks are opened.
- Excel takes the calculation mode from the first workbook that is opened,
and then you can change it using Tools Options Calculation
- When Excel recalculates it recalculates all open workbooks.
- if a workbook has not changed since its last recalculation and contains no
volatile functions then it will not be recalculated because there is nothing
to recalculate.
- in Automatic mode a recalculation is triggered when a workbook is opened

If excel is in automatic mode it will recalculate whenever any data or
formula is changed/entered in any of the open workbooks.
(there are some other conditions as well see
http://www.DecisionModels.com/calcsecretsb.htm and
http://www.DecisionModels.com/calcsecretse.htm and associated pages for more
details).

regards
Charles

Hi Charles,
Thanks for quick response.
I have looked at the links, and it stated that

'Automatic calculation mode means that Excel will automatically recalculate
all open workbooks at each and every change, and whenever you open a
workbook.'

However, I found that is not happening to all workbooks.
And those workbooks were all saved with Excel 2000, and opened in Excel
2000.

What would be the other reason for triggering the recalculation of WB1.xls?

Thanks.

How do you know that your workbook is not being recalculated ?
