reboot required

I have an hp desktop with windows xo home edition.

My screen went black and instructed to insert media disk and reboot.

what happened?

No way to know based on what you told us. And Windows XP doesn't come with a
"media disk".

insert media disk and reboot.

Good question. I would suspect that some sort of failure occurred,
resulting in the system being unable to access the hard drive, at
least temporarily.

What happened on the reboot?

Try to remove any removable disks, like diskette or CD or VDV.. and reboot
your computer. it could be due to those.
