"Reboot and select proper boot device" Message

M

MJB

I have been using two 120 gb SATA on my P4C800 Deluxe for a couple of years.
I just swapped out my D drive for a 300 gb SATA drive. Now every third or
forth time I boot I get the message "Reboot and select proper boot device or
insert media and press any key". The drive is the only change I made. I
have the latest BIOS and have tried disabling the 300 gb drive as a boot
device and checked the boot device order in the BIOS but so far nothing
helps. When I get the message if I restart it will usually start normally.
Any Ideas??

Is the "IDE Detect Timeout" set to 35 seconds ? That is the
maximum time the BIOS will wait for a drive to finish spinning
up, when connected to the Southbridge. I don't think the Promise
20378 chip has a configuration option for timeouts (RAID BIOS
modules for add-on chips don't seem to support that option
in general).

If this is a Hitachi drive, there were some issues with detection
with Hitachi drives. (Hitachi-IBM drives like to do things
differently.) There was a BIOS fix a while ago, to fix some kind of
problem with large Hitachi disks. See the description for BIOS
1017 below. Also, it looks like 1019 added a setting to the
BIOS, for another spinup delay time.

I have had BIOS 1019 for a while. There are a few settings that I thought
would help but didn't; drive detection to normal rather than fast, fast
boot disabled, and disabling the 300gb drive as a boot drive. It is a
Maxtor drive like my others and I ran the installation utilities. I put the
old (120 gb) back in and now everything works normal. I sent an email to
ASUS tech it will be interesting to see what they have to say.

Thanks for your help.

There are problems with Diamondmax 10's. Some people have
managed to get a firmware upgrade from Maxtor, but I expect
Maxtor really doesn't like to send that out to everyone.
(Firmware upgrades are something they give to OEMs or big
customers.)
