Really Microsoft?

Glen Corlin

Hi all. Every once in a while I get an e-mail, supposedly from MS,
containing a supposed security patch and telling me to install it. The
latest one comes from "MS Corporation Network Customer Support,
(e-mail address removed)", and contains a file called Q256158.exe.
Is this really MS, or someone propagating a virus?
Thanks.

Some devious person is "spoofing" Microsoft. The email message is
not from Microsoft and should be deleted immediately!

Please take a moment to read the following article:

Hi Glen,

As other have stated, Microsoft never sends out patches unsolicted. Use
Windows Update to get the hotfixes you need and delete the spoofed email
without opening the attachment.

It is definitely NOT from Microsoft. Delete the message, and DO NOT open any
attachments it may have (could contain a virus).

Microsoft NEVER send unsolicited e-mail.

*Every single email* I have gotten purporting to be from Microsoft
containing a "patch" to be installed showed up in Norton Antivirus as
containing a virus.

Microsoft *does not* distribute its patches as attachments to email.
PERIOD.

MS *never* send out such patches by email. This is a hoaxer trying to
persuade you to run the attachment, which is a virus
