Read only word files in Windows 2000 Professional

Some PCs with Windows 2000 cannot open read only files.
Why is this? Can anyone help?

What happens when they try? Might want to post this in a Microsoft Word
group for best results, and provide more details of the problem.

When a Word file has been passworded in the "Save As -
Options - Password to Modify" route the file cannot be
opened in Windows 2000 Professional. No error message
appears - the file just doesn't open after clicking on the
open as read-only button. Can anyone suggest a fix?

As mentioned, this should be posted in a Word group - this group is for
Win2000.

I posted this problem in the Word group on 12th December -
no reply yet. The problem only occurs with Windows 2000
so I posted it here as well.
