Read only attributes

I need to have a file not to be read only. I go in
properties and change the setting in read only from solid
green square in the box to leaving it blank. (my only
other choice was check mark) I then hit apply then ok.
But when I return the solid green square is back in the
Read only. What do I need to do to keep a file as
rewrite file.

This works for me. When I transfer .doc files from a
closed CD they will be read-only. Find file in Explorer.
Right click on it. At bottom of resulting menu
click 'Properties'. This produces an info box relating to
that file. Uncheck the Read Only box. I'm not familiar
with the green square you mention.

Black tick is Set, No tick is not set. Green square or grey tick is indeterminate, ie it's not saying if it's set or not (possibly because multiple files are selected and some are set and some aren't). XP won't tell you about folders, no do changes apply to folders as read only is meaningless on folders - folders are ALWAYS writable.
